Blank Children’s Hospital

Blank Children's Hospital, a service of UnityPoint Health - Des Moines, is completely dedicated to meeting the unique health care needs of children. Blank Children's is a 108-bed environment that embraces and encourages families to be a part of their child's healing and recovery. Everything from equipment to decor is designed specifically for children.

 

Blank Children’s is seeking a dedicated Advanced Practice Practitioner to join our well-established team specializing in child protective services.  The role provides a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of vulnerable children by working alongside experienced providers in a multispecialty setting.

 

  • Joining a team of Advanced Practitioners in the well-established STAR Center which houses a Child Advocacy Center, the Foster Care Clinic and other specialized clinics
  • New, free-standing building in West Des Moines
  • The Child Advocacy Center averages nearly 800 medical exams per year, seeing 1,400 children annually 
  • The Foster Care Clinic sees over 450 patients annually, and continues to rapidly grow
  • For these patients, they provided over 2,000 office visits last year
  • Ability to work as a team member to improve the health of the people and communities we serve

Responsibilities

  • 2 days/week (.4 FTE) with the Foster Care Clinic
  • Comprehensive physical exams on pediatric patients (birth to age 18), specifically for children in foster care, kinship placement, and/or adoptions
  • Diagnosing and treating common childhood illnesses
  • Medication management for acute and chronic conditions
  • Knowledge of vaccines and routine check-ups/well child visits as outlined by the American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Maintaining detailed and accurate patient records, including working with Epic EMR
  • Comfortable with care coordination and advocating with families with histories of child abuse.
  • Able to work in a multidisciplinary team with experts within and outside of your field (mental health therapists, family advocates, interviewers, etc).
  • Will be involved in teaching medical students, advanced practitioner students, resident physicians, and others
  • Working closely with outside teams including HHS, law enforcement, shelters, foster care agencies and families.

Qualifications

  • Up to date ARNP certification (PNP or ARNP with peds experience is required)
  • Minimum 2-3 years of peds primary care experience
  • Strong pharmacology knowledge, and ready to learn to psychiatric pharmacology if not already proficient
  • Interest in mental health/trauma field
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • BLS certified
  • Specific interest in child welfare/abuse management and complex childhood trauma. Previous experience in this is helpful not required
  • Ongoing education. In addition to CME requirements, there are additional conferences both at the local/state level and nationally that require attendance
