This position plays a critical role in overseeing and optimizing patient flow across our healthcare system. Patient flow is defined as ensuring timely and appropriate transfers, maximizing capacity, and partnering with stakeholders to ensure timely and safe patient discharges from our hospitals. The Medical Director will strive to improve clinical outcomes and enhance communication between referring and receiving facilities. The Medical Director will work collaboratively with hospitalist teams, emergency departments, specialty services, and administrative leadership to develop and implement best practices, focusing on efficient patient transfer, and placement, and throughput in UnityPoint Health hospitals.

• Provide support to direct reports, including the Associate Medical Director and Intake Physicians
• Build and maintain strong relationships with market and system stakeholders to advance UnityPoint Health’s mission of improving the health of the people and communities we serve
• Effectively manage timelines and guide team members through organizational and operational changes
• Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Consistently reflect UnityPoint Health’s Values and Standards of Behavior while adhering to all policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
• Maintain regular, reliable attendance to support the operational needs of the department
• Apply working knowledge of HIPAA, The Joint Commission (TJC), DNV, OSHA, and other relevant federal and state regulatory standards in daily practice
• Demonstrate knowledge of hospital and departmental compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g., Medicare and Medicaid) related to fraud, waste, and abuse. Promptly bring any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the attention of hospital administrative staff and take appropriate action on concerns reported by departmental staff

• MD or DO
• Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine
• Ability to obtain and hold an unrestricted license to practice in the state of Iowa and Illinois
• Hold current and unrestricted state and federal authority to prescribe and administer medications as necessary or appropriate to the physician’s field of practice
• Eligible to work in the United States (H1-B cap exempt)
