The System Transfer Center Intake Physician serves as a clinical liaison to ensure timely, appropriate patient transfers across hospital facilities. This role involves reviewing transfer requests, assessing clinical needs, coordinating with specialty teams, and facilitating patient placement to optimize care transitions.

 

The physician supports communication between referring and receiving providers, resolves clinical concerns, and may accept patients on behalf of admitting providers within defined guidelines. By collaborating closely with the Transfer Center team and various departments, this role contributes to improved patient flow, efficient resource use, and high-quality care delivery across the system.

Responsibilities

  • Flexible FTE options - PRN, Part-Time or Full-Time available 
  • Triage and approve transfer requests based on clinical criteria and hospital capacity
  • Serve as the primary clinical contact for referring and receiving providers during transfers
  • Coordinate communication among care teams to ensure timely, seamless patient transitions
  • Collaborate with bed management to optimize placement and balance patient load across facilities
  • Provide expert consultation on urgent cases and assist with outpatient testing and procedures when appropriate
  • Facilitate efficient patient flow by identifying and removing barriers to resource utilization
  • Document and track transfers to ensure policy and regulatory compliance
  • Accept patients within defined parameters of the Transfer Center
  • Participate in provider meetings, quality reviews, and process improvement initiatives
  • Support efforts to enhance patient flow and improve the overall transfer process

Qualifications

  • MD or DO
  • Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine
  • Ability to obtain and hold an unrestricted license to practice in the state of Iowa and Illinois
  • Hold current and unrestricted state and federal authority to prescribe and administer medications as necessary or appropriate to the physician’s field of practice
  • Eligible to work in the United States (H1-B cap exempt)
