Blank Children's Hospital, a service of UnityPoint Health - Des Moines, is completely dedicated to meeting the unique health care needs of children. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will play a vital role in supporting Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This position involves direct patient care, surgical assistance, clinical documentation, diabetes management, and coordination of multidisciplinary care. The APP will collaborate closely with MFM specialists, obstetricians, nursing staff, and other care providers to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care for high-risk obstetric patients.

Responsibilities

Inpatient Responsibilities
• Participate in daily rounds with the MFM team, including patient assessments, documentation, and care coordination.
• Draft and maintain clear, consistent, and efficient progress notes, discharge summaries, and consultation reports, with MFM provider attestation as appropriate.
• Assist with coordination of inpatient consults, transfers, and communication with referring providers.
• Support management of obstetric emergencies and acute complications under MFM supervision.

 

Outpatient Responsibilities
• Assist with clinic documentation, ensuring consistency and accuracy in note formatting to optimize communication and patient care continuity.
• Provide patient education and counseling regarding complex pregnancies, diagnostic testing, and treatment plans.
• Participate in fetal surveillance, including interpretation of ultrasound findings (with physician oversight as appropriate).
• Manage routine follow-up visits and support continuity of care for high-risk patients.

 

Surgical & Procedural Responsibilities

• Serve as first or second surgical assistant for cerclages, amniocentesis, CVS and other perinatal procedures.
• Ensure pre- and post-operative documentation and patient education are completed accurately.

 

Specialty Responsibilities: Diabetes & Chronic Disease Management
• Provide comprehensive care for patients with diabetes in pregnancy, including insulin titration, medication adjustments, and dietary counseling.
• Oversee remote patient monitoring (RPM) for diabetes and other chronic diseases in pregnancy, ensuring timely review and intervention.
• Collaborate with endocrinology, referring providers, and nutrition services to optimize maternal and fetal outcomes.

Qualifications

Licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (ARNP) or Physician Assistant (PA-C) in the state of practice.

National certification as ARNP (e.g., FNP, WHNP) or PA-C required.

Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in women’s health, obstetrics/gynecology, or maternal-fetal medicine preferred (new graduates with strong interest in MFM considered).

Surgical first-assist certification/experience preferred.

Experience with diabetes management in pregnancy, including insulin use and monitoring technologies, strongly preferred.

Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.

Proficiency with electronic medical records and documentation standards.

Valid driver's license
