John Stoddard Cancer Center, a service of UnityPoint Health – Des Moines, is among the top achieving cancer programs in the nation and has been recognized for its quality cancer care. We have been a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program for over 45 years. We are also a Breast Cancer Center and Clinical Radiopharmaceutical Therapy Center of Excellence.  This is a result of decades of research, cancer treatment experience and cancer care technology.  We have one of the most technologically advanced and diverse radiation oncology departments in the Midwest.  Patients and their families have access to a wide range of services that were created to provide them with comprehensive and compassionate care including oncology navigators, patient support groups, nutritional support, survivorship, genetic counseling, and wellness programs. The UnityPoint Health - John Stoddard Cancer Center is privileged to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of skilled physicians providing state-of-the-art care in Central Iowa. The Service Line Medical Director reports to the Chief Medical Officer of Oncology. This role is the accountable clinical executive for all Oncology services within assigned Division provided across the entire UnityPoint Health geography and across all sites of service. Key activities include education and training, short-term and long-term strategic planning, leading physicians and other providers in optimizing clinical, operational, financial effectiveness and efficiency, and system leadership responsibilities. The physician leader is expected to maintain a part-time clinical practice (maximum 0.25 administrative FTE).  

Responsibilities

  • Establish strong working relationships with service line physicians (employed as well as independent partners) and other providers and stakeholders through regular and ad hoc meetings, site visits and other connections as requested or needed. 
  • Lead service line physicians and other health care providers in the identification of unnecessary clinical and associated operational variation and the development of high reliability care standards. 
  • Champion the adoption of high reliability care standards with regional and subspecialty physician and provider leadership. 
  • Develop and review performance dashboards and monitor clinical outcomes, including but not limited to quality and patient experience results; develop and implement action plans as needed to optimize outcomes. 
  • Manage performance of physicians and advanced practitioners within the service line, proactively building culture and addressing performance concerns.
  • Serve as the primary representative for Medical Oncology within the system and independent partners. 
  • Responsible for clinical, fellowship, and research program building. 
  • Responsible for leadingand participating in establishing standardized clinical protocols, system policies and procedures. 
  • Responsible for ensuring adherence to established protocols and policies and procedures. 
  • Disseminate information to providers and staff and conduct scheduled meetings to discuss and plan for future activities.  
  • Attend seminars, conferences etc. to maintain up-to-date knowledge and insight in national developments relevant to service line activities 
  • Ensure alignment of service line physicians in achievement of strategic priorities and goals.  
  • Partner with oncology directors to develop a short term (1-2 year) and long-term (2-5 year) Division strategic plan that is aligned with and informed by the UPH strategic plan and overall oncology service line strategic plan. 
  • Surface ideas and provide internal consulting for new programs, initiatives and technology investments, and participate in business plan development and discussions with all stakeholders. 
  • In partnership with oncology directors , establish, strategize, coordinate, and collaborate in the achievement in the key performance metrics, goals and objectives.  
  • Participate in workforce planning discussions for physicians and other providers. 
  • Lead the development of service line physician and provider recruitment strategies and actively participate in the recruitment process. 
  • In partnership with the oncology operations leader(s), manage the profit and loss of the assigned Division. 
  • Participate in strategic, operational, and capital discussions pertaining to Division activities. 
  • Develop and implement tactics in collaboration with oncology directors the dyad partner that leads to the overall profitability of the service line. 

Qualifications

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Radiation Oncology
  • Advanced degree in healthcare managemet (MBA, MHA) preferred
  • Ability to obtain and hold an unrestricted medical license in the state of Iowa 
  • Hold current and unrestricted state and federal authority to prescribe and administer medications  
  • Eligible to work in the United States
